Review of Mythological Monologues: 26 Dramatic Monologues of Epic Characters from Ramayana and Mahabharata by Purba Chakraborty

‘Mythological Monologues’, I am glad that this book made it to my recommended books to-read list, and I was instantly attracted by the title and the cover of the book and hit the purchase button with anticipation.

In an Indian household we constantly find the mention of Ramayana or Mahabharata, and the life lessons they teach us. If you have grandparents living with you, then the importance of these epics increases manifold. These epics can be compared to modern time’s encyclopedias, albeit they provide knowledge on life and its journey as a whole. There are so many characters in these two epics that sometimes keeping a tab on them becomes difficult, but each character has a role to play and a lesson to impart.

We get so tangled in reading the scriptures that we never in fact view the characters separately, as entities with feelings and emotions of their own. The USP of the book is the way Miss Purba Chakraborty has put her imagination at work and allowed the characters to be viewed as individuals with thoughts and justifications of their own. While reading the book, I realized that if characters like Ahaliya, Janki, Eklavya had real-life existence then maybe they would have put their emotions into words, exactly like the author has achieved.

The book not only showed Miss Chakraborty’s knowledge of the epics but also showcases her creative and imaginative power. This book is a must-read, and I did not want to put it down once I had begun my perusal.
Without any hesitation, I would recommend this book to all the literature fanatics out there to indulge themselves in this amazing book.
